Giovanni Domenico Partenio
Giovanni Domenico Partenio (also Giovanni Partenico, * before 1650 in Spilimbergo , † 1701 in Venice ) was an Italian singer, composer and bandmaster of the Baroque.
From February 1666 Partenio was a singer ( tenor ) at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, where he also received his further education, his remuneration at the time was 80 ducats. In January 1674 he received 100 ducats. In July 1685 he became vice-Kapellmeister in succession to Giovanni Llimani . In 1692 he took over the post of Kapellmeister from Giovanni Battista Volpe , who had died a year earlier. In addition to this important position in the musical life of the lagoon city, Partenio was “maestro di coro” at the “Ospedale dei Mendicanti” from 1685 to 1689 and probably also for a short time at the Ospedale degl'Incurabili .
As a composer he was active rather sporadically, but left five operas behind. Partenio was one of the co-founders of an approximately 100-member musicians' association, the " Sovvegno di Santa Cecilia ", in which Lenze and Volpe held leading positions.
His works were highly praised during his lifetime, as a composer of church music and as a choirmaster he enjoyed a high reputation, although the quality of the chapel of St. Mark's Basilica deteriorated under his leadership.
