Giovanni Maria Barbieri
Giovanni Maria Barbieri (* 1519 in Modena ; † 1574 ibid) was an Italian philologist and Romance scholar .
life and work
Barbieri came to the French court in 1538 in the entourage of Ludovico II. Count von Mirandola (1527–1568) and stayed in France until 1545. Then he returned to Modena and became chancellor there in 1560.
Barbieri researched French and Provencal poetry of the Middle Ages, also consulted Italian and Spanish and left behind a manuscript that was important for early Romance studies with the title Arte del Rimare , which was published by Girolamo Tiraboschi in 1790.
