The Giraglia II was a bulk RoRo freighter that could be used to transport both cement in bulk and RoRo cargo. The Giraglia II, the only representative of this type, was built in 1979 at the Ateliers et Chantiers Rochelle shipyard in La Pallice , France for the French shipping company Societe Mediterraneenne de Cabotage in Nice . It was operated on the regular service between Nice and the island of Corsica . It was not until 2002 that the ship was sold on to the Greek shipping company Emel Shipping and renamed Fillipos K II . On February 25, 2002, the ship sank 11 nautical miles off the island of Skyros in bad weather.
Loading space arrangement
The ship was divided into two holds:
An area located in the center below with 10 cylindrical metal tanks to be filled with cement from above via a compressed air connection. The unloading took place pneumatically in the same way.
A trailer deck with a track length of 90 meters was arranged above the bulk loading area, which could be reached via a 4.5 × 7.5 meter rear ramp.
