The boro-freighter (from the English B ulk O il Ro Ro ) represents a type of vessel is, simultaneously with the dry bulk or oil and Ro can be transported mixed loading.

history

The concept was developed by Bengt Törnqvist, owner of the Swedish shipping company Scandinavia Motorship AS . Licenses for BORo ships were granted to Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Kobe, Burmeister & Wain in Copenhagen and Götaverken / Eriksberg in Gothenburg. However, the only two representatives of this type developed in Sweden were the motor ships Bellman and Taube . These were built in 1977 at the Kawasaki shipyard in Kobe .

The two ships were primarily intended to sail forest products from Sweden and bring back oil products, but with the greatest possible flexibility for the transport of other goods. Already in 1984/85 both ships were sold on to the Italian shipping company Ignazio Messina & Cie SpA , converted into normal RoRo ships Jolly Grigio and Jolly Amaranto and remained in service as such (April 2009). The Jolly Amaranto suffered machine damage on December 12, 2010 on the voyage to Alexandria and had to request towing assistance. The ship capsized and sank on the tow.

The Giraglia II was a bulk RoRo freighter, with which cement in bulk and RoRo cargo could be transported at the same time . The ship sank in 2002.

Loading space arrangement

When they were built, the two ships were divided into four areas with their hulls, which tapered downwards at an unusual angle:

  • A centrally located cargo hold for liquid or dry bulk goods, which can be filled from above via a hatch
  • A trailer deck 115 meters long and six meters high is arranged on both sides next to the hatch shaft and above the bulk loading area, which can be reached via two 12.5 × 7.5 meters rear ramps
  • A car deck 115 meters long and 2.2 meters high is arranged on both sides next to the hatch shaft, which can be reached from the trailer deck
  • The weather deck, which can be reached from the ro-ro area via another ramp, on which trailers or containers can be stowed.
