Girvan is a whiskey distillery in Girvan , South Ayrshire , Scotland .

history

Before founding the distillery, William Grant & Sons , the founders and owners of Glenfiddich and Balvenie , began to expand their field of activity to include the manufacture of blends . However, they fell out with the Distillers Company Ltd. (DCL), which controlled a large part of the production of the required grain whiskey . For this reason, the company was forced to establish its own production facility. The decision was made in favor of the small coastal town of Girvan, in the vicinity of which an empty ammunition factory from the Second World War offered a suitable site for the construction of a distillery. The distillery has been in operation since then and claims to be the most technologically advanced distillery in Scotland. It is one of the largest distilleries in the country.

Ladyburn

In 1966 William Grant & Sons opened a malt distillery called Ladyburn on the grounds of the Girvan distillery . This was an experimental distillery that was supposed to deliver malt whiskey for blends. However, operations were closed again in 1975 to allow the Girvan distillery to expand. In 1976 the buildings were demolished.

Ailsa Bay

In 2007 William Grant & Sons opened a new malt distillery called Ailsa Bay on the grounds of the Girvan distillery .

The water required for whiskey production is taken from the Penwapple reservoir . For burning are each a Coffey Still and Continuous Still available. The production capacity is 150,000  hl .

The Ladyburn distillery also got its water from the Penwapple reservoir and used two coarse stills ( wash stills ) and two spirit stills .

Bottlings

There is a single-grain original bottling from the Girvan distillery, which is marketed under the name Black Barrel . This was launched in 1995 and is available almost worldwide. However, the majority of the whiskey produced is used to make blends.

Despite the short production span, Ladyburn has several original bottlings. Furthermore, there are also bottlings by independent bottlers. Ladyburn whiskeys are valuable collector's items today.

In addition, the single malt "Ailsa Bay" has been available in stores since 2017.
