GitLab can be integrated into products for developers and can even be controlled remotely via an API. GitLab is developed in the programming languages Ruby and Go .

The GitLab Community Edition (CE) is developed as open source software under the MIT license . Since August 2013, GitLab Inc. has offered functions relevant to companies in the Enterprise Edition (EE) . You can run GitLab on your own hardware or since 2012 on GitLab.com as GitLab Enterprise Edition - as Software as a Service (SaaS). In addition to free hosting of private and public repositories , paid support is also offered. GitLab is thus an alternative to similar offers such as GitHub and Bitbucket .

history

GitLab was developed in 2011 by Ukrainians Dmitri Saparoschez and Valery Sizov using Ruby on Rails . With Sytse "Sid" Sijbrandij Dmitri founded GitLab BV in 2014, based in Utrecht . In March 2015, GitLab BV took over the smaller competitor Gitorious , which was closed.

In March 2015 gitlab became a member of Y Combinator and could in July starting capital (Engl. "Seed funding") in the amount of 1.5 million US dollars from venture capitalists Khosla Ventures , 500 Startups company and other venture capital funds to complete . In a first round of financing ("series A") in September of the same year, Khosla Ventures invested a further 4 million US dollars in the company.

In September 2016, GitLab was able to raise funds totaling 20 million US dollars in a second financing round ("series B") from August Capital , Y Combinator and Khosla Ventures.

According to GitLab, more than 100,000 organizations and “millions of people” use (as of 2016), including IBM , Expedia , NASA , Sony and CERN .

GNOME has also been using GitLab since May 2018 . In mid-2020, KDE also completed its move to a self-hosted Gitlab repository.

Following Microsoft's announcement in June 2018 that it would take over GitLab's largest alternative, GitHub , GitLab's daily page views increased tenfold at short notice.
