Gitta Nickel

Gitta Nickel (born May 28, 1936 in Briensdorf , East Prussia ) is a German filmmaker . She is one of the few women directors who were successful in the GDR . Since the 1960s she has produced more than 60 films, some of which have received awards at festivals.

Live and act

Nickel studied pedagogy and German at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1957 she finished her studies with the state examination.

She then gained her first experience in the film business as an assistant director. From 1959 she is also involved in this function as the production of feature films. In 1963 she switched to documentary film and worked with Karl Gass . Two years later, she made her first own film, We understand each other .

In the following years she made more and more documentaries in the Soviet Union. In addition, she was also interested in everyday life in the GDR and captured this in some productions.

Nickel staged several film portraits for GDR television, including a. 1977 a film about the director Konrad Wolf .

In 1973 she received the GDR Art Prize . Some of her films received awards at various festivals in the GDR, for example the Findlingspreis at the National Festival of Documentary Films in the GDR in 1982 .
