action

The gynecologist Dr. Gisela Otto walks across Berlin's Alexanderplatz to go to VEB Textilkombinat Treff-Modelle , where she would like to give a lecture. There she lets the SED party secretary guide her through the women's outerwear company in order to get to know it and the employees better. Here she learns that 90 percent of the 1,300 employees are women. About 85 percent of the masters employed are women and the current production director is preparing to become the director of the company. The women speak openly about the problems that the function of a master brings with it.

Now the doctor Gisela Otto is introduced in more detail, whose main occupation is in the field of cytodiagnostics . She has been a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics for five years and is now working on her degree as a specialist in social hygiene . The lecture she gives to some of the women in the company should also be seen in this context. She talks about partner relationships, family planning, the right time for women's qualifications, the importance of kindergartens and much more. There is a lively exchange of ideas among the participants. This discussion is only interrupted by film recordings showing the doctor supporting the birth of a child in the hospital.

Leading women talk about their work, how they cope with it and the aim is to win new colleagues for higher positions. So far, the male colleagues are still in the majority at this management level. The BGL chairwoman of the FDGB is shown as a positive example of how family and business can be reconciled. The camera accompanies her and her husband with housework, in which both are actively involved. In the company, she is popular with all colleagues because she takes care of their problems. In this way, she can convey the joyful news to a worker that she will finally get an apartment. But she is also the contact person for many other things, as she has worked in several positions in the company for many years and is therefore recognized by her colleagues as one of their own.

criticism

In New Germany , Horst Knietzsch, Jochen Reinert and Peter Berger claim in a contribution to the 13th International Leipzig Documentary and Short Film Week for cinema and television that film occupies a special position at the festival:

"It is one of the few contributions that bring everyday socialist life to the screen and in which problems and conflicts of socialist contemporaries are tracked down."

Günter Sobe also has a similar opinion in the Berliner Zeitung on the same occasion:

"If the DEFA film 'You' (Gitta Nickel) about the life, love and views of women in the GDR received an award, it is certainly not least because it reflects something of the spiritual emancipation of people in the socialist countries."

For Manfred Meier of the Neue Zeit, it is clear on the same occasion that Gitta Nickel makes a valuable contribution to the image of the new person and society with her film:

“Here, in a refreshingly relaxed form, animated by graphic elements and songs, the problem of equality and qualification of women is dealt with, using the example of employees of a Berlin clothing company. The camera (Niko Pawloff) looks these women in the face and in the heart, the portraits capture the essentials, and from this a picture of the situation of women in the GDR is formed - socialist everyday life is conjured up with humor.
