Giulio Silvestrelli (* 1853 in Rome ; † 1938 ) was an Italian diplomat .

Life

Giulió Silvestrelli married Elisabetta Ziegler, their son was Luigi Silvestrelli . He entered the foreign service on February 16, 1878. He was at the embassy in London busy to 3 February where he from November 5, 1894 1895 Charge d'Affaires was. From May 9th to October 23rd, 1895 he was envoy to the Hermitage (Saint Petersburg) .

In 1902 Silvestrelli was ambassador in Bern . On February 5, 1902, he asked the Swiss authorities to sue the editor Luigi Bertoni , because an article in Le Réveil anarchiste had glorified the murder of Umberto I (Italy) on July 29, 1900 in Monza. The Federal Council (Switzerland) referred to the freedom of the press and the Art. 42 of the Criminal Code (Switzerland) in 1853, after insulting a foreign ruler a antragsdelikt was. Silvestrelli, supported by Foreign Minister Giulio Prinetti, his personal friend, refused to submit a written request for persecution. The government under Giuseppe Zanardelli left Giulio Silvestrelli at his post in Bern, whereupon the Federal Council decided on April 4, 1902 to break off diplomatic relations with Italy. These were resumed on July 19, 1902 through the mediation of Alfred von Bülow (1851-1916). On March 21, 1906, the Federal Assembly (Switzerland) adopted Art. 48ter (in the final version Art. 52bis: "Glorification of anarchist crimes and incitement to corresponding crimes") "Lex Silvestrelli" into the Criminal Code (Switzerland) .

Silvestrelli was ambassador in Madrid from February 11, 1904 to June 12, 1910 . Giulio Silvestrelli was planned by Foreign Minister Tommaso Tittoni as Italian delegate to the Algeciras Conference from January 16 to April 7, 1906. When Tommaso Tittoni was replaced by Antonino Paternò Castello, marchese di San Giuliano, the Italian government was represented by Emilio, marquis Visconti-Venosta .
