Luigi Bertoni

Luigi Bertoni (born February 6, 1872 in Milan , † January 19, 1947 in Geneva ) was an Italian- born Swiss anarchist , author and typographer .

Life

Bertoni was a cousin of Brenno Bertoni , like him he came from the village of Lottigna in the Valle di Blenio . The families who emigrated from there were often active in the Lombard retail trade. His father ran a drugstore. After training as a typographer in Como , he worked in Mendrisio and then in Bellinzona . In 1900 Bertoni founded the anarchist newspaper Le Réveil / Il Risveglio , published twice a month in Italian and French, in Geneva , which he published until his death in 1947. This magazine was the central organ of the anarchist movement in western Switzerland . In 1902 he was charged with organizing the first general strike in Geneva and sentenced to one year in prison. Under pressure from the labor movement and the trade unions, who threatened a general strike, he was released after 132 days. He fought actively for the Fédération des Unions Ouvrières de la Suisse romande , a trade union federation. In 1906 Bertoni was arrested again and sentenced to one month in prison.

The charge was for writing an article in memory of the anarchist Gaetano Bresci . He wrote articles and organized conferences throughout the period of World War I. In 1918 he was imprisoned in Geneva with 120 mostly Italian anarchists for 13 months because he was accused of organizing bomb attacks in Italy and Zurich. He was later acquitted of these allegations. Bertoni motivated many Geneva anarchists to participate in the Spanish Civil War , such as Lucien Tronchet.
