Giuseppe Boldù (* 1793 in Venice , † December 25, 1837 in Venice) was appointed mayor ( Podestà ) of Venice, Austria at the time , from April 1834 until his death . He was followed by Giovanni Correr in office.

Life

Venice, which belonged to Austria from 1815 to 1866 , was given a three-year Podestà during this period, which was often inadequately translated as 'mayor'. The commune proposed three candidates, one of which the Austrian emperor selected.

Giuseppe Boldù was born in 1793 to the nobleman Francesco Boldù, who sat on the Council of Ten , and his wife Anna dei conti Giovanelli. Giuseppe's grandfather held various offices in Dalmatia , Albania and Corfu , then Podestà and Capitanio of Padua . His father died early and so Giuseppe was brought up by Giacomo Wirkinian Recanati and Giuseppe Priuli, then he moved to a monastery on Murano .

The city proposed three candidates for the office of Podestà to the Austrian emperor, of which Francis I chose Boldù. In the economically difficult times he managed to organize the finances of the charitable associations, especially the orphanages, and thus relieve the city treasury. More manpower and money were again put into the poor houses and the upbringing of the children. 57 facilities were financed with a cost of more than 1.2 million lire. Since the harsh winter of 1830, the roads and paths had been in poor condition and the canals had to be repaired. Especially along the Canale della Giudecca , many areas have now been expanded and improved. An elegant bridge was built on the Zattere . The islands of San Michele and San Cristoforo were merged into one island to enlarge the communal cemetery. In October 1835 cholera was rampant in Venice, on December 12, 1836 the La Fenice theater burned down , but it was rebuilt within a year.
