Giuseppe Mazzuoli , called Bastarolo or Bastaruolo (* approx. 1536 in Ferrara ; † November 9, 1589 there ), was an Italian painter.

biography

There is no information about his origin or education. From the surviving works, which belong to the last phases of his activity, it can be assumed that he was trained in Ferrara. A Descent from the Cross and a cycle of eight images attributed to Bastarolo, depicting scenes from the life of Jesus and originally attached to the ceiling of the Chiesa del Gesù , are kept in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Ferrara. The Descent from the Cross shows the painter's closeness to Mannerism . An Annunciation dating back to around 1585 is still in the Chiesa del Gesù. One of the painter's last works is an altarpiece from the Santa Barbara Oratory with the depiction of the Madonna and Child in glory between the saints Ursula and Barbara, venerated by the virgins, and is now in the Musei Civici di Arte Antica in Ferrara. Here Bastarolo presents a devotional image, which is characterized by a simple and popular language.
