Giuseppe Recco

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giuseppe Recco (* 1634 in Naples ; † 29 May 1695 in Alicante ) was a Neapolitan still life painter.

Giuseppe Recco, the son of Giacomo Recco , was already a celebrated artist during his lifetime. He received his education from his father and his uncle Giovanni Battista Recco .

During a trip to Lombardy, he studied the work of Evaristo Baschenis and subsequently became, like his father, a painter of naturalistic flower still lifes. After his return to Naples, however, influenced by Caravaggio and his circle, he switched to fish, game and kitchen scenes.

His works are characterized by clear compositions, which are based on a balance between horizontal and vertical, which are considered typical Neapolitan style. From around 1670 his compositions show a more baroque, decorative style.
