Ksaver Šandor Gjalski , also Đalski (born October 26, 1854 in Gredice , † February 9, 1935 there ) was a Croatian writer.

Life

The name Ksaver Šandor Gjalski is a pseudonym . His real name was Ljubomil Tito Josip Franjo Babić. He was a nobleman and was born in the Gredice family estate. He attended elementary school and high school in Varaždin , and studied law in Zagreb (1871–1873) and Vienna , where he passed the state examination in 1878. For more than 20 years he remained an assessor in Koprivnica , Osijek (1879), Virovitica (1880), Pakrac (1886), Sisak and Sušak (1887) and Zagreb (1891). After his retirement in 1898, he returned to his beloved Gredice. In 1903 he took over the editing of the magazine Vijenac . Politically, Gjalski was initially a supporter of the right-wing party, later of Josip Juraj Strossmayer . In 1906 he became a member of the Croatian Sabor and the Croatian-Hungarian Sabor in Budapest on the list of the Croatian-Serbian coalition. 1909–1918 Gjalski was chairman of the Association of Croatian Writers. From 1917 to 1918 he was chief clan of the Zagreb County and in 1919 a member of the provisional national representation in Belgrade. He then lived on his estate in retirement until his death.

Gjalski is counted among the epoch of Croatian realism. He wrote novels and short stories. His first volume of short stories , Pod starim krovovima , remained best known , in which he wrote of the slow decline of the Croatian nobility and their lack of understanding of modern times. In his later works he already approached Croatian modernism. Gjalski was a supporter of Schopenhauer's pessimism.
