Echinococcus equinus is a parasitic tapeworm from the genus Echinococcus ; it was previously described as a genotype (G4) of Echinococcus granulosus . Its occurrence extends from Europe over the Middle East to Africa.
It only affects horses as an intermediate host ; the disease is echinococcosis in horses . Its final hosts are foxes or dogs that become infected by feeding on infected horse meat. It can also be experimentally transferred to cats , but fertile hydatids rarely develop here . Individual cases of horse imports have been described worldwide. It is believed to be non- pathogenic to humans . The species status has not yet been finally clarified.
