The Glanum Dam was a Roman arch dam in Glanum near today's Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in Provence ( France ). In the 1st century BC The dam built in BC is considered to be the oldest of its type.
The dam, located in Vallon de Baume, dammed the water with an arched construction arched against the direction of flow, which was about 14.7 meters high and 3.9 meters wide at the base of the wall and 3 meters wide at the top of the wall. The radius of the wall arch, 23.8 meters long in the crown area, was 28.6 meters. The opening angle of the arch was 73 °. The wall consisted of two parts with a filling in between. The dammed water was used to supply the nearby town of Glanum.
The facility was discovered by Esprit Calvet in 1763. According to recent studies, the dam was built from bracketed blocks and sealed watertight. The openings for the wall heads were cut into the rock. In 1891 a new dam was built just above the Roman construction. There is only one drawing of the old dam wall.
