The glossy-backed sailor ( Apus acuticauda ) is a species of bird belonging to the order of the sailor birds .

description

The completely dark bird reaches a length of 17 to 18 centimeters. It is slim and has scaling on the underside . The tail is forked deep.

Distribution and population

The glossy-backed sailor is known from a few breeding colonies in the foothills of the Himalayas in Bhutan and in the mountain ranges of the states of Meghalaya and Mizoram in northeastern India . Nothing is known about his wanderings. Outside the breeding season, it has been observed in India and northwestern Thailand . Due to the known breeding colonies, the population is estimated to be between 200 and 1000 specimens. The IUCN therefore classifies it as endangered.

Way of life

The glossy-backed sailor breeds in colonies in the crevices of rock walls or in gorges that are 200 to 1,350 m deep near forests. The breeding season is from March to May. During breeding, the birds stay in the immediate vicinity of the breeding colonies. They then move away and return the following year. Outside the breeding season, it can be observed at heights of up to 1,500 m.
