Glaresis is the only genus of the Glaresidae family within the beetle suborder Polyphaga .
features
Beetle
The beetles are 2.5 to 6.0 millimeters in length and have a light to dark brown body. This is elongated, oval and convex. The back is sparsely to moderately dense, with short hairs. The head is angled sharply downwards. The ten-part antennae carry a three-part club. The palps are four-limbed. There are five visible ventrites (visible abdominal sclerites ) on the abdomen. All tracheal openings , which are located in the membranes of the pleura on the abdomen, are fully developed. The genitals of the males consist of a simple, symmetrical, triple lobe. The genital capsule is clearly visible. In females four ovarioles (are per ovary ovarioles ) available.
The autapomorphies that distinguish the group from the other families of the Scarabaeoidea are the regressed wing veins RP1 and RP3 + 4.
Distribution and way of life
The small family is common worldwide with the exception of Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Very little is known about their way of life. In sandy and semi-arid areas the adults can be attracted by light sources. If you disturb the animals, they produce weak stridulation sounds. The larvae are unknown.
Taxonomy and systematics
Until recently, the genus was assigned to the Erd beetles (Trogidae), from which it was separated due to a lack of autapomorphies. The genus is in a sister relationship to the other families of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea. About 50 species have been described so far.
