Stained glass Wilhelm Franke
Glasmalerei Wilhelm Franke is a German company.
history
The master glass painter Wilhelm Franke has been operating as the “Institute for Glass Art and Art Glazing” in Naumburg since 1859 . Since 1862 Franke belonged to the guild of the city. Thanks to solid work and artistic standards, Franke was able to gain honor and reputation. He received prizes and recognitions in 1865 from the city of Merseburg , art, trade and industry exhibition. 1879 followed the diploma of the arts and crafts exhibition in Leipzig. In 1906 he was at the World Exhibition in Paris with various exhibits by glass painter Fritz Geiges in Freiburg im Breisgau (1853-1935).
Franke died in the spring of 1888. His stepson Albert Hartung took over the business. With the new partner Dusberger, the company name changed to "Dusberger & Hartung" for a short time. Dusberger later left the company and the company continued under the old company name.
The number of employees grew around the turn of the century. Customers also included the imperial family and gave the company the name of purveyor to the court. The Kaiserhaus donated several stained glass windows in South West Africa from the Senate of the Hanseatic City of Bremen. The Wilhelm Franke glass painting operated as a global company.
At the end of the chaos of war in 1945, the workshop came to an abrupt end. A part of the factory was badly damaged. After completing the master's school and studying at the University of Art & Graphics in Hungary, Lutz Gärlich took over the company portfolio in 1966. The archive contained numerous drawing boxes, drafts, photo books, photo plates and extensive business documents. Since then, under Domglas Naumburg , glass painting has been continued as a master-run family business in the third generation.
Manufacturing
Painting, grinding, engraving, sandblasting, etching and coating are extensive forms of refinement. First, the corresponding glasses are cut and designed depending on the version. The only still producing glassworks in Germany, Glashütte Lamberts from Waldsassen, supplies real antique glass . Almost any shade can be made. With the hand-blown antique glass, the glass panels of 0.5 m² vary in thickness from 2 to 4 mm. Glasses with colored overlays build up accordingly.
Works
The number of glass designs with the lettering Glasmalerei Wilhelm Franke, Naumburg is unmanageable. With increased attention, not only building-related church projects, but also extensive glass designs for the private sector were carried out.
