Glen Albyn was a whiskey distillery in Inverness , Scotland , UK .
history
The distillery was founded on October 10, 1844 by James Sutherland. In November 1849 parts were destroyed by a fire, but the distillery was able to produce again in February 1850. From 1855 the distillery was to be sold, but since no buyer could be found, it was shut down in 1866 and only used as a flour mill . It was not until 1884 that Gregory and Co. converted it back into a distillery. Between 1917 and 1919 it served as a US naval base and sea mines were produced here instead of whiskey . In 1920 the distillery was taken over by James Mackinlay and John Birnie ( Mackinlay & Birnie Ltd. ), sold to Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1972 , closed in 1983 and demolished in 1986. Today there is a supermarket on the site.
production
The water of the distillery, which belongs to the Highlands / Northern Highlands region, came from the River Ness , as in the Glen Mhor opposite . It had a wash (8,000 l) and a spirit still (7,000 l) manufactured by Fleming, Bennet & McLaren in Glasgow and heated by steam since 1964.
