The Glenluce Monastery ( En : Glenluce Abbey ; Gäl. Abaid Ghlinn Lus ) was a Cistercian abbey in Scotland . It is located 1.5 kilometers northwest of the town of Glenluce in Galloway .
history
The monastery was founded in 1192 by Roland, Lord of Galloway . Glenluce Abbey was a subsidiary of Dundrennan Abbey , a daughter of Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire ( England ), which in turn was a subsidiary of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . After the Scottish Reformation in 1560, the monastery fell into disrepair. The resolution is said to have taken place in 1602. The facility is looked after by Historic Scotland .
"Glenluce" (Anglicised) or Gleann Lus ( Latin Vallis Lucis ) means "Valley of Light" in German.
Buildings and plant
The system followed the usual scheme. The church (Early English) had a transept. The choir and parts of the south transept are in ruins. The vaulted chapter house with a central column was built in 1470. Part of the cloister was rebuilt.
