Glevum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Glevum was a Roman city in the province of Britannia ( Britain ), on the site of the present day city of Gloucester in the county of Gloucestershire in England . Glevum had the status of a Colonia . Her full name was Colonia Nervia Glevensium . As the name suggests, the city was raised to a colony under Nerva (96-98).

history

A legionary camp was set up in the area of the later city around AD 49 . It is controversial which legion was stationed there. From 67 AD a new camp was built a little south. This took up an area of 17.4 hectares. After the Legion withdrew, the place was raised to a colony.

The plan of the camp was retained and the walls were converted into city walls. The old principia in the center of the city have been converted into a forum with a basilica . It has not yet been possible to locate other public buildings with certainty. In the north of the city, however, there was a colonnade that must have belonged to a larger building.

During the second century the wooden military barracks were replaced by stone buildings. A large peristyle house was excavated in the west of the city . So far, 41 mosaics have been found in the city area . Most of them decorated with geometric patterns.

At the end of the second century, the city wall was expanded, with towers being attached to the inside of the wall. There were extensive suburbs outside the city walls. There were some important buildings, especially in the north. This part of town may go back to the old canabae .

There is evidence that the place was continuously inhabited until the fifth century. In 577 the city is said to have been captured at the Battle of Deorham .
