Gliese 581 b is one of at least three known exoplanets (Gliese 581 b, c, and e ) orbiting the red dwarf Gliese 581 .

discovery

The planet was discovered by a team of French and Swiss astronomers using the HARPS instrument and the radial velocity method (see figure), who reported their discovery on November 30, 2005 .

Movement of planet and star around the common center of gravity (barycenter / red cross). The movement of the star can be observed and measured.

properties

The minimum mass of Gliese 581 b corresponds roughly to the mass of the planet Neptune . The planet orbits its star at a distance of about 0.04  AU . It is estimated that there is on the planet a temperature of 187  ° C .
