The Global Organic Textile Standard ( GOTS ) is a global standard for the processing of textiles made from organically produced natural fibers and is therefore an important textile seal . It defines environmental requirements along the entire textile production chain , as well as social criteria. Quality assurance takes place through independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.

organization

The Global Organic Textile Standard International Working Group (IWG) consists of four member organizations:

  • International Association of the Natural Textile Industry (IVN), Germany
  • Soil Association (SA), England
  • Organic Trade Association (OTA), USA
  • Japan Organic Cotton Association (JOCA), Japan

They bring their respective specialist knowledge of organic agriculture and environmentally compatible and socially responsible textile processing to GOTS, together with other international stakeholder organizations and experts.

In 2008, the IWG member organizations jointly founded Global Standard GmbH, now a non-profit company . This company carries out all activities in connection with the implementation of GOTS and the associated quality assurance as well as the licensing system. She is also the owner of the GOTS label, which has already been registered as a trademark in almost all relevant markets for organic textile goods . The International Working Group is the decision-making body for all relevant structural and political questions with regard to the GOTS program.

Goal setting

The aim of this standard is to define requirements that ensure the sustainable production of textiles, from the extraction of raw textile fibers to environmentally friendly and socially responsible production to the labeling of the end products and thus to offer product safety for the end consumer.

criteria

Minimum social criteria

You must have a management system with defined elements to ensure compliance with the minimum criteria. The conventions of the International Labor Organization serve as the basis for an appropriate implementation and assessment of the respective social criteria.
