Global Soil Week

The Global Soil Week ( GSW , German  , World Soil Week ' ) is an irregularly in Berlin held conference for the exchange of ideas between social decision-makers (eg. As politicians in government) and scientists on the topic of soil protection and sustainable land use. It took place for the first time in mid-November 2012. The organizer is the Global Soil Forum , a sub-organization of the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam.

GSW 2012

The motto of the first Global Soil Week was Soils for Life (Eng. "Soils for Life"). The main topics were global countermeasures against soil degradation , the regulation ( governance ) of land and soil use, sustainable land management and the creation of interfaces between science and politics.

Around 400 participants from all over the world came to GSW 2012. It was organized by the former German Environment Minister Klaus Töpfer in his role as Director of the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS).

GSW 2013

The second GSW took place at the end of October 2013 under the motto Losing Ground? (Eng. analogously "Are we losing the ground [under our feet]?") instead. This time, the initiators warned that the loss of soil was already threatening the existence of 1.5 billion people worldwide. In addition, this time the aim of the Global Soil Week was that cities should not only become greener, but should also be specifically unsealed and, overall, significantly less soil should be destroyed by human activities. The consequences of land grabbing should also be pointed out. Soil conservation , the global fight against hunger and against climate change as one of the future: should finally become political targets Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which from 2015 on a world scale, the UN - Millennium Development Goals are to (MDGs) supplement.
