The Globians Doc Fest Berlin is one in 2,005 Potsdam based independent documentary film festival with a focus on English-language films. The festival has been taking place in Berlin since 2008 . Documentations on numerous areas of life (religions, traditions, urban and rural life, the environment) of various (sub) cultures from all over the world are shown at the festival - with the aim of creating a global awareness of change processes in the world.

History of the festival

It was founded in 2005 as Globians welt & culture documentary film festival by Joachim Polzer , who has been the festival curator since then. From 2005 to 2008 the event took place annually in August in Potsdam in the old town hall . In 2008 the festival moved to Berlin , where in September 2008 the 4th Globians Film Festival was repeated in the Filmkunsthaus Babylon . With the move to Berlin, the English-language documentary film festival now also operates as Globians Doc Fest Berlin. From 2009 to 2011 the festival took place in August at the Toni cinema in Berlin on Antonplatz in Berlin-Weißensee .

The 8th Globians Doc Fest Berlin is scheduled for January 31 to February 2, 2013 , which means it will take place in winter for the first time.

In addition, the Globians Doc Fest Stuttgart took place in November 2010 in the Linden Museum with its own program profile, which is now the second independent program series with a focus on "Audiovisual Anthropology" from April 20-22 , 2012 in Halle (Saale) as Globians Doc Fest Halle is to be continued. A repetition of the Halle festival program is to be carried out from May 4th to 6th 2012 at Ballenstedt Castle as Globians Doc Fest Harz .

Festival program

With a broad concept of culture, films are about world cultures, cultural worlds, differences between rural and urban life, contributions to regional and local traditions, films about ethnic studies and cultural identities, about subcultures and gender roles, about topics such as integration, migration, globalization, the environment, conflicts , War, economy, history and questions of the right, sustainable lifestyle are shown.

With an average of around 50% film share in the overall program, the Globians Doc Fest Berlin focuses on Anglo-American documentary film productions and is therefore a priority forum for example. B. for the independently produced, North American, British and above all Australian documentary film in Germany.

The festival categories of Globians Doc Fest Berlin are: feature documentation (61–180 minutes in length), medium-length documentaries or filmic essays (30–60 minutes), short documentaries (4–30 minutes) and mini movies (up to 4 minutes, open form) . No prizes will be awarded at the festival, instead the festival aims to promote the exchange between international filmmakers, journalists and audiences and to provide a platform for independently produced films.

Feedback and reception of the festival

Up to and including 2011, around 500 films from around the world were shown to the public; more than 200 filmmakers personally accompanied their films at the festival. In total, there were over 3,000 submissions from independent filmmakers and producers from all continents.

The Globians Doc Fest Berlin is establishing itself with the festival language English as a start-up film festival among the still young film festivals in Germany. With its focus on English-language, independent documentaries, it is an important forum for the independently produced US, Canadian, British and Australian documentary films.

So far there have been over 400 pages of press coverage as well as numerous radio and television reports accompanying the event (for example on Deutschlandfunk / Deutschlandradio and RBB).
