The Gmunden Choral Society 1861 is a traditional choral society from Gmunden . In the course of history, the association had prominent board members such as the composer Johann Evangelist Habert and prominent members such as the composer August Pepöck , who also composed the club's anthem Gmundner Motto .

history

The Gmundner Gesangsverein was founded on April 3, 1861 as the Gmundner Men's Choir against the background of the reaction era that followed the European revolutions of 1848/1849 . Political activity was forbidden to the citizens, and the founding of associations was also forbidden. The formation of musical communities was tolerated as long as they remained private. The choral society was therefore an opportunity for the citizens of Gmunden to gather outside the control of the authorities. The choral society consisted of the wealthy part of the bourgeoisie, members were mainly teachers, booksellers, school directors, hoteliers, druggists and merchants. In 1862 the choir, which was having a difficult start, joined the Upper Austrian-Salzburg Singing Association.

In contrast to numerous other music associations that emerged from similar backgrounds, the Gmundner men's choir managed to establish itself on a professional musical level. The Salzkammergut developed into a tourist center that also attracted musical circles from Vienna. The composers Johann Evangelist Habert and August Pepöck formed the artistic backbone and provided the choir with artistically rich pieces. The men's choir took on the singing part in concerts by the Gmundner Musikverein. The positive reception in magazines from all over the German-speaking area shows that the men's choir was able to establish itself artistically. The Musikalisches Wochenblatt wrote in 1871 that Gmunden was musically not inferior to Linz, which is many times more populous.

The men's choir also took care of the folk songs from the Salzkammergut region. Founding bandmaster Johann Krepper took care of the traditional songs of the miners from neighboring Ebensee and Hallstatt . Several song books were put together under Krepper and his successors, in which these songs, some of which have already been forgotten, have been preserved.

In 1879 the 4th National Singers' Festival of the Upper Austrian-Salzburg Singing Association took place in Gmunden. Until the First World War, the men's choral society continued to develop and became an integral part of Gmunden's cultural life. During the First World War, numerous singers were drafted, the singing business could not be maintained. In 1933 the OÖSSB's 14th National Singers' Festival took place in Gmunden, and Federal President Miklas was one of the participants . In 1936, the Edelweiß men's choir and the 1861 men's choir merged to form the Gmundner men's choir in 1861 . During the Second World War, the association almost came to a standstill again, but was resumed after the war thanks to the tireless efforts of the members.

In 1956 several women's choirs joined the men's choir, which is why the club was renamed to its current name, Gmundner Gesangsverein 1861 . In 2006, master organ builder Andreas Kaltenbrunner took over the baton. He is very active as an organ builder, piano maker and church musician. He worked as an organist in Grünau im Almtal from 1973 to 2003 , and at the same time as an organist in Scharnstein from 1977 to 2005 . In 2006 the choir traveled to Rome together with 4 other choirs and performed the Great Credo Mass by WAMozart both in St. Paul Outside the Walls (the second largest church in Rome after St. Peter's Basilica) and in the famous Pantheon.
