Goat Island is an island off the South Island of New Zealand in the Otago region . The island measures about 400 m in north-south direction and 150 m in east-west direction. It is located between Port Chalmers in the north and east and the larger Quarantine Island in the southeast in the middle of Otago Harbor .

Under the agreement with the Ngāi Tahu 1996 the island was given as part of the official name of the original Māori domain name Rangiriri , in German Mad sky .

The entire island has been registered as a historically valuable area with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust under number 7504 under the name Goat Island / Rangiriri Historic Area since 2001 .
