Godebold of Meissen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Godebold († August 31, 1140 ) was Bishop of Meissen from 1119 to 1140 .

Godebold also appears with the names Godebald, Godewald, Gottwald, Goswald, Gotthold, Gotthard, Gerhold or Gorhold . Historical ranks of bishops name another bishop Berthold as Herwig's successor , but this is not documented and Machatschek follows Ernst Gotthelf Gersdorf's research by seeing Godebold as Herwig's immediate successor.

Godebold was enthroned by the Magdeburg Metropolitan Rudgar von Veltheim . Godebold had a friendly relationship with his successor, St. Norbert von Xanten . He also stood by him during a riot and his persecution in Magdeburg. At a diocesan synod held in 1130 the Margrave Conrad I was present with his sons Otto , Dietrich , Heinrich , Dedo and Friedrich . Several monastery foundations took place during his time as bishop.
