The Goegap Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in the Northern Cape Province in the Republic of South Africa and is located 15 km east of Springbok .
After a few extensions, the current size is 16,000 hectares . The name Goegap is derived from the Nama word for water hole. The nature reserve is part of the Succulent Karoo with an average rainfall of 150 mm per year. The temperatures are extreme, frost in winter and over 40 ° C in summer.
The area includes mountains (the highest mountain is the Carolusberg at 1,345 m) and wide sandy plains. The main attraction is the desert blooms, which in spring - provided there is enough winter rain - transform the plains into true seas of blossoms . The main flowering time is August and September. Around 600 different plant species have been counted here so far.
Large species of animals include oryx , klipspringer , duiker and Hartmann mountain zebras . There are also many smaller mammal species, 100 different bird species including ostriches , 26 reptile species and three amphibian species .
There are circular routes for normal cars and routes for 4x4 . The Hesters Malan Wild Flower Garden information center provides information on the succulents found in Namaqualand . Here the succulents that occur in the near and far surroundings are planted like in a garden and provided with name tags. The hiking trails with a length of four to twelve kilometers start in the parking lot in front.
