The building

The local history museum, opened in 1992, is located in the former hunting lodge of the Counts of Nassau-Weilburg and was built between 1719 and 1721. The building has been owned by the community since 1838 and was a school and teacher's residence until 1965. The gable building with half-timbered upper floor is now a listed building .

Local history collection

On the ground floor, old agricultural equipment and farm goods as well as wheelwright's tools and a series of photos from "the good old days" are presented in two rooms . One focus is on the means of production for the well-known "Hüttenberger Handkäse ". On the first floor there is the fully furnished living room and bedroom as well as a kitchen from the turn of the century. They give an insight into the living culture of the region. A shoemaker's workshop and a laundry room were housed in the basement . In the attic there are devices for flax processing and baking as well as the furniture of a school class and traditional Hüttenberger costumes .

Ballroom

Ballroom with memories of Goethe's Werther

In contrast to the local history collection, the ballroom, furnished in the style of the time, on the same level reminds of the memorable dancing pleasure that took place in this place on June 9, 1772 and went down in world literature. J. W. Goethe, an intern at the Wetzlar Reich Chamber of Commerce at the time , was one of the 25 participants, including Charlotte Buff , Johann Christian Kestner's fiancée, who had come to the country from the neighboring town. A little later he described this event in literary terms in his “The Sorrows of Young Werther ”. Pictures of the ball goers also show Lotte slicing bread and the unhappy Jerusalem, both of which became the subject of the famous novel.
