history

Ferdinand Goetz founded the German Gymnastics Association in 1868 together with Theodor Georgii (1826-1892) as an amalgamation of gymnastics clubs in Germany, which at the time became the world's largest gymnastics organization. At first Goetz was its honorary managing director and from 1895 until his death chairman.

On his 100th birthday, the gymnastics association organized a fundraising campaign to erect a memorial for him. The Leipzig sculptor Carl Seffner (1861–1932), who had known Goetz personally, was commissioned to design a portrait bust that was cast in the Noack bronze art foundry. It was Seffner's last creation of a monument. It is not known who designed the pedestal. In addition to Seffner himself, the Lindenau master builder Carl Iffland, who was responsible for the foundation work, or Goetz's son Paul could be considered. The inauguration took place at Pentecost 1926, Whit Monday was the 100th birthday of Ferdinand Goetz.

The Goetz-Haus Leipzig e.V., founded in 2000 to save the decaying Goetz-Haus . V. renovated the house and monument in Leipzig until the German Gymnastics Festival in 2002.
