Gohar Gasparyan

Gohar Gasparyan (Գոհար Գասպարյան; * December 14, 1924 in Cairo ; † May 16, 2007 in Yerevan ), also known as "Armenian Nightingale", was an Armenian opera singer.

Life

Gohar was born into an Armenian family in Cairo and studied at the local music academy. In 1948 she emigrated to the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic together with thousands of other Armenians from the Middle East .

Gasparyan has appeared in 23 operas and concerts during her long career at the Yerevan Opera Theater . In 1951 she took over the soprano part in Haro Stepanian's A Heroine in Yerevan. This opera won one of Stalin's music awards.

She also taught at the Yerevan State Conservatory . Gasparyan was the recipient of the People's Artist of the USSR , Hero of Socialist Labor and the Order of Saint Mesrop Mashtots .

Gohar Gasparyan died in Yerevan and is buried at the Komitas Pantheon .
