Gokomere

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gokomere , today Gokomere Mission , is a place in Zimbabwe eight kilometers away from Masvingo .

Gokomere is known for its rock paintings, which are believed to date from 300 to 650, but the date is uncertain. They were discovered in 1927 by Thomas Gardner , SJ (1866–1944) in a field with huge granite rocks. There he found around 30 drawings, protected from rain under overhanging walls.

Gokomere asks questions about the ruins of Greater Zimbabwe , which was built around 1000. Hunters and gatherers, Iron Age agriculture and societies based on the division of labor seem to collide directly. The Gokomere / Ziwa tradition is archaeologically assigned to the Iron Age with characteristic pottery and copper use. Finds in the lower Zambezi Basin in Mozambique near Sena , Chinde and Matola are also assigned to this tradition .
