Goldberg (Fichtel Mountains)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Goldberg is a ridge in the Fichtelgebirge , east of the town of Goldkronach in the district of Bayreuth (Upper Franconia). It consists of Hinterem Goldberg ( 671  m above sea  level ) and Vorderem Goldberg ( 628  m above sea  level ). The name indicates that gold ore deposits were mined here.

Gold mining

A share of more than 1,000 marks in the Fichtelgold mining company from November 1921

The Rautenkranzstollen on the Name-Gottes-Gang and in its presumably southern continuation the pit "Lazy Igel" on Schlegelberg, the Ostertagstollen on the Täschelzug and the Schmutzlerzeche are mentioned as early as around 1400 . The mine workings soon assumed a considerable size for the time, 500 miners are said to have found work in Goldkronach at that time, and the place flourished quickly. The yield in the flowering period is said to have been 1,500 gold ducats per week. The mining industry suffered its first setback in the Hussite Wars (1417–34), and gold mining continued with varying degrees of success. Only in 1631 did it come to a complete standstill for a long time as a result of the Thirty Years War . After the founding of a new mining company in 1662 by Margrave Christian Ernst, the “Fürstenzeche” and “Schmutzler” were reopened. From 1792 to 1795, Mining Authority Assessor Alexander von Humboldt took on the promotion of mining, in 1828 the Bavarian state initiated the resumption of operations, and in 1907 a new union was found that operated mining with modern resources on the “Fürstenzeche” and “Silver Rose”. In 1920 it was transferred to Bergbau AG Fichtelgold. The first samples showed 35.4 grams of gold and 22 grams of silver per ton of raw ore, but this was considered unprofitable and brought mining to a standstill.
