The Fürstenstein is a rocky peak ( 675  m above sea  level ) on the northern slope of the Goldberg in the Fichtelgebirge . It consists of gneiss phyllite with black slate and has been designated as a natural monument due to its geological peculiarities .

history

The rock summit used to be much larger. In the middle of the 19th century, stones were broken there for the mining office building, which was moved from Wunsiedel to Brandholz in 1856 . Now it is 30 meters wide, 30 meters long and 15 meters high.

The prince stone is located in the montane historically significant area of the former Brandholz- Goldkronacher gold mining area. The gold antimony - mineralization was the basis for a lasting nearly 600 years of mining. This was operated by the Burgraves of Nuremberg and the Margraves of the Principality of Bayreuth (1365 to 1791), in the Prussian period (1791 to 1806), in the Bavarian period (1828 to 1865) and by Fichtelgold AG (1920 to 1925).

Geotope

The rock formation has been designated as Geotope 472R001 by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment . See also the list of geotopes in the Bayreuth district .
