The Hooded Grebe ( Podiceps gallardoi ) is a bird art from the family of grebes (Podicipedidae), the only southern South America, in the Argentine province of Santa Cruz in Patagonia occurs.
features
When fully grown, gold log divers reach a size of about 32 centimeters and weigh about 500 grams. They are medium-sized grebes that have black and white plumage. It is named after its cinnamon and black colored cap. They are also characterized by their small, pointed beak.
Way of life
Golden log divers live on lonely lakes at altitudes of 500 to 1200 meters. They feed mainly on small invertebrates, especially pond snails of the genus Lymnaea and amphipods . The food is mainly sought between the tufts of the milfoil ( Myriophyllum ). The birds can stay under water for 16 seconds.
The population is very small; the species was not scientifically described until 1974.
Like many other grebes - for example the great crested grebe and racing divers - the golden log divers have a distinctive and noticeable courtship behavior. The males and females look at each other and move their heads up and down violently.
