The Gulf of Malia ( Greek Μαλιακός κόλπος , Maliakos Kolpos , Latin Sinus Maliacus , also Malian Gulf , Maliakos Bay or Gulf of Maliakos ) is a bay in central Greece on the Aegean Sea . The offshore island of Evia is located in front of the bay . In addition to the central estuary of the Spercheios , the tributaries of many smaller rivers in Central Greece are located on the bay. The bay is bordered by the Kallidromos Mountains, the historical landscapes of Lokris and Mali , the Trachinic rocks and Thermopylae in the south . In the north of Thessaly there is the also mountainous Achaia phtiotis , which was formerly inhabited by Greek Achaeans .
