The Sperchios at Makrakomi

The Sperchios ( Greek Σπερχειός , old Greek transcription Spercheios; also Alamana Αλαμάνα, Latin Spercheus ) is a river in the region of Central Greece in Greece .

The Sperchios rises on the Tymfristos massif in the regional district of Evrytania . To the south it passes the Tymfristos massif, the village of Lianokladi and then enters the Fthiotida plain at the level of the village of Makrakomi . The Sperchios then flows in an easterly direction through the plain of Fthiotida, passing the city of Lamia to the south. The swamps and wetlands that originally existed south of Lamia were drained and the Sperchios canalized. After 82 km it flows into the Malian Gulf .

The Sperchios has several tributaries. The most important tributaries flowing to the right are the Roustanitis and the Bistrica. Other smaller tributaries are the Mavroneri Fthiotidas, the Gorgopotamos and the Asopos Fthiotidas. The latter three tributaries originally flowed into the Malian Gulf. By channeling and relocating the Sperchios estuary by about eight kilometers to the east, the tributaries now flow directly into the Sperchios.

The entry of sediments from the Sperchios leads to an increasing silting up of the Malian Gulf (compare the silting up of the Thermopylae pass today in relation to the ancient topography, e.g. at the time of the first battle of Thermopylae against the Persians in 480 BC).
