GOLIF is an Austrian artist . He is a graduate of the University of Applied Arts in Vienna . He is one of the most important Austrian representatives of Street Art / Urban Art.

Conception and working method

Characteristic of GOLIF's memorable style is its expressive, dynamic lines. As a result, many of his works are reminiscent of East Asian calligraphy or dark graphic novels. Characteristic figures and faces with stoic expressions are shown almost exclusively. They are symbols of the unknown and anonymous that the artist encounters in the people of the big city . "You see a lot of people in the city, but you don't look behind their facade.

GOLIF has an ambivalent relationship to the street art scene. His oeuvre can be better located under the definition of a classical artist who combines graphics, painting and sculpture in his work. Nevertheless, he partly works in the space traditionally assigned to street art . Further interfaces with street artists * can be found in his special relationship to public, urban space and its areas of tension: Golif on this in an interview with the daily newspaper Der Standard : "It burns in me to redesign the city."

Technically, his work is extremely diverse. It ranges from cardboard objects and graphics, through humorous overpainting of different, sometimes exotic printed products to large-format works on classic canvas. Black ink, which enables his concise stroke, is predominant. However, many paintings also have a large application of paint in strong tones. The oversized works in public space are created with a brush and roller as well as with the airless device.

Works in public space

"The Observer", realized in 2016, is Golif's most elaborate work. It is a ground work with an area of about 6 soccer fields. If you are on site, you can only see black and white fields. The artist used five tons of paint. Due to its enormous size, the giant painting can best be seen from space.

A large-scale further development of his characteristic figures can be found in his 2,500 m2 wall paintings at the Agrarspeicher in Korneuburg , Lower Austria. In 2017, the artist produced two figures on two sides of a concrete tower from the 1970s that shaped the landscape within four weeks, which, in contrast to the "observer", live from their monumental steadfastness and coloring. The plant can be viewed from the Donauufer Autobahn (A22).

Two further interventions in public space can be found on the Vienna Belt . In 2019, the artist created two 15x25 meter wall paintings on empty house walls in the 15th and 17th districts. Thanks to their prominent placement, the works are perceptible to all participants in street and city life.
