Gomashio ( Japanese 胡麻 塩 or ご ま 塩 , from goma "sesame" and shio "salt"; Korean 깨소금 Kkaesogeum ), also Gomasio or sesame salt , is a spice mixture of Japanese or Korean cuisine , which consists of roasted black sesame seeds and sea salt . Outside of Japan, white sesame is often used instead, and sometimes glutamate is also added.

In Japan, gomashio is mainly used on rice as a furikake for sekihan and onigiri .

Gomashio can easily be made by yourself. The common ratio of sesame to salt is 7: 1; those who love it low in salt can also increase the sesame content. The sesame seeds are lightly roasted, then ground or rolled and mixed with the sea salt. The sesame seeds contained in Gomashio are an important supplier of calcium : two tablespoons provide as much calcium as a glass of milk.
