Onigiri ( Jap. お握り , 御握り , kana おにぎり ), also Nigirimeshi ( 握り飯 , 握飯 , にぎりめし ), short- Nigiri ( 握り , にぎり ) or Omusubi ( お結び , 御結び , おむすび ), are seasoned Japanese dumplings made of rice . They are available in different shapes, for example triangular, square and spherical. They are eaten with or without a filling or a seasoning mixture ( furikake ) sprinkled on top , which is available in different flavors such as fish, eggs or vegetables.

An onigiri usually has a triangular shape and is often covered with nori seaweed to make it easier to grip. It is often filled with different types of fish, vegetables or leavened fruits. Traditionally, these include, for example, salted salmon ( sake ), smoked bonito ( Katsuobushi ), edible seaweed ( konbu ) and fresh or dried Japanese plums ( umeboshi ). Other seafood such as tuna ( maguro ), fried shrimp ( ebi furai ) or Pollackrogen ( mentaiko , tarako ) than fillings also popular.

Onigiri are a popular snack between meals. They are available in many variants in most Japanese convenience stores ( コ ン ビ ニ , konbini ) and grocery stores, so-called onigiri-no-hanbaiten ( お に ぎ り の 販 売 店 ), also known as "onigiri sales stores". In addition, some restaurants, so-called Onigiri-ya ( お に ぎ り 屋 ), or “Onigiri House”, have specialized in the production of handmade rice balls. As traditional take-away or “ fast food ”, onigiri is more popular in Japan than sushi , for example , because onigiri are cheaper than sushi.

Onigiri is very popular in many Japanese restaurants around the world. They are also sold in the convenience stores in Taiwan and Hong Kong under the Chinese name " Japanese-style Fantuan " ( Chinese  日 式 飯糰  /  日 式 饭团 , Pinyin rìshì fàntuán  - "Japanese style rice dumpling ") in various flavors with tuna, salmon or also offered other ingredients.
