Gongkar tradition
The Gongkar tradition ( Tib . : gong dkar pa ) or Dzongpa (rdzong pa) or later Dzongpa tradition is a sub-school of the Sakya tradition of Tibetan Buddhism ( Vajrayana ). The Sakya tradition is one of the four great Buddhist traditions ( Nyingma , Kagyu , Sakya and Gelug ) in Tibet .
This sub-school was founded by Gongkar Künga Namgyel ( gong dkar kun dga 'rnam rgyal ; 1432–1496) with the establishment of the monastery Gongkar Chöde ( gong dkar chos sde ) or Gongkar Dorjeden (gong dkar rdo rje gdan) or Dorjeden Gompa (rdo rje gdan dgon pa) founded in 1464 in Gonggar (Gongkar) in Tibet .
The Gongkarpa continue the tantric tradition of the Sakya lineage.
In contrast to the earlier Dzongpa school system of Dzongpa Künga Gyeltshen (1382–1436) it is referred to as the later Dzongpa school system after Dzongpa Künga Namgyel (1432–1496) .
