features

Goodson pigeons reach a body length of 24 centimeters. The gender dimorphism is not very pronounced.

The males have a light blue-gray head, neck, and chest. On the chest, the plumage takes on a lavender shade. The top of the head and the back of the neck have a more wine-colored sheen, which turns into a red-violet tone on the coat. The wings and the wing coverts are dark olive-brown with little or no red-violet shimmer. The back and the rump as well as the upper tail covers are olive brown with a distinct red-violet sheen. The tail feathers protrude only about 4 centimeters above the upper tail covers. The tail feathers and the hand wings are dark olive brown. The belly and the under tail coverts are reddish brown and merge into a reddish chestnut brown on the under tail coverts.

The iris is whitish. The orbital ring is gray-purple. The strong beak is black, the feet are red.

Females are colored similarly to the males, but a little more dull overall. Young birds are similar to females.

The calls of the Goodson pigeon are a bright, melodic cu wuuk-wuuk , which is regularly interrupted by a rolling rrrruuuu .

Possible confusion

It can be confused with the purple pigeon and the wine pigeon , both of which belong to the same genus.

The purple pigeon is more brightly colored and has a longer tail and a longer and less powerful beak. The wine pigeon is more powerfully built and also has a longer tail. The plumage on the underside of the body is more uniform.

distribution and habitat

The Goodson pigeon is found only in western Colombia and Ecuador. Their habitat are forests of the lowlands and the foothills, rich in rain. It occurs at altitudes up to 1000 meters and is rarely observed at altitudes up to 1500 meters.

Although the habitat of the Goodson pigeon has become smaller due to increasing deforestation, it is still a very common species in places. In Ecuador, it is also found in forests where selective logging has taken place. However, she prefers to stay here in the vicinity of still untouched primary forest areas .

Way of life

The Goodson pigeon is a resident bird that lives on trees and rarely comes to the ground. It usually stays in small groups and eats a wide range of fruits and berries. She has a particular preference for the berries of mistletoe .

In Colombia, breeding goodson pigeons are observed from January to May and in August. The nest is a loose platform that is built between climbing plants in the lower canopy area of trees. Courtship flights have been observed in the males, during which they soar up steeply and either return to their stand guard without flapping their wings.

Trivia

The Goodson pigeon is named after Arthur Thomas Goodson (1873-1931), who worked as an assistant ornithologist in the British Rothschild Museum, now known as the Natural History Museum at Tring . It's not the only species of bird named after Goodson. A subspecies of the brown-backed pipit ( Anthus leugophrys goodsoni ) also bears his name.
