The purple pigeon ( Patagioenas subvinacea ), also called reddish pigeon , is a species of pigeon that is widespread in South and Central America . The IUCN classifies the species as not endangered. It occurs in four subspecies in its range.

External features

The purple pigeon is 28 cm long and weighs 170 grams. It is about the size of a laughing dove . The plumage is gray on the upper side of the body with a reddish sheen. The underside of the body is maroon or cinnamon in color. The beak is dark. The iris is reddish.

The distribution area of ​​the purple pigeon extends from Costa Rica to Ecuador , Bolivia and central Brazil .

In Central America it lives in mountain forests from an altitude of over 1500 m and occurs up to the tree line. In the lower elevations, the short-billed pigeon, which is a closely related species of the purple pigeon, is represented instead . The best way to distinguish the two species is by their calls. The purple pigeon calls are faster and less complex.

In South America it inhabits humid forests from the lowlands up to 1,500 meters above sea level. Their distribution ranges from Costa Rica to Ecuador , Bolivia and central Brazil .

Purple pigeons usually live in pairs and hunt in the treetops foraging for fruit and berries. Purple pigeons use the ground to drink and to take up grit. The nest of the purple pigeon is usually at a height of five meters above the ground. The purple pigeon only lays one white egg.

So far, six subspecies have been recognized as valid taxa . It is about:

The first discovered subspecies subvinacea was classified in 1868 at Dota in the province of San José in Costa Rica. They can be found in the subtropical zones of Costa Rica and Panama. The subspecies berlepschi occurs mainly on the Pacific coast from southeast Panama to southwest Ecuador. In northeast Colombia and western Venezuela is the ssp. Zuliae home. On the Paria peninsula as well as in northeastern Venezuela you can see the ssp. observe peninsularis . The ssp. purpureotincta occurs from the southeast of Colombia over the south of Venezuela to Guyana. Finally, the range of the ssp. bogotensis from the northern end of the western Andes of Colombia to the southern part of the Brazilian Amazon as far as northern and eastern Bolivia.

The subspecies Patagioenas subvinacea ruberrima ( Meyer de Schauensee , 1950), Patagioenas subvinacea ogilviegranti ( Chubb , 1917) and Patagioenas subvinacea anolaimae are usually considered invalid taxons.
