Gordon Campbell (Vice Admiral)
Gordon Campbell ( January 6, 1886 - July 3, 1953 ) was a British officer in the British Royal Navy . He achieved the rank of vice admiral. He was awarded the Victoria Cross and three times the Distinguished Service Order .
First World War
During the First World War, the Q-ship Farnborough , which sank two German submarines ( U 68 and U 83 ), was under Campbell's command . When U 83 was sunk , the Farnborough was so badly damaged that Campbell had to put his ship aground on the south west coast of Ireland. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for sinking. Since the honor was related to the use of a submarine trap, it was initially kept secret and referred to as the Mystery VC .
Campbell later took over another Q ship, the Dunraven . She was sunk by UC 71 on August 18, 1917 .
Interwar period
From 1925 to 1927 Campbell commanded the battle cruiser Tiger . From 1931 to 1935 he was a member of the Burnley constituency in the British House of Commons .
Campbell also recorded his seafaring experiences in literature.
