Gorgeous Carat ( Japanese ゴ ー ジ ャ ス ・ カ ラ ッ ト ) is a Shōnen-Ai - Manga by the Japanese artist You Higuri , which appeared from 1999 and has been continued several times. The work is about the jewel thief Noir and his life and love for an impoverished nobleman in France at the turn of the 20th century .

content

The jewel thief Noir was up to mischief in France at the beginning of the 20th century. In a black tuxedo and top hat he only robs the richest of the rich and the police are at a loss. In his middle-class identity as Count Ray Balzac Courlande, he made the young Floréan, son of the impoverished noble Rochefort family, his assistant. Floréan was sold by his family so that they could have money again and that he might get a better life than they can offer him. At first, Noir is only interested in information about a jewel that the family still owns and that the mother does not want to sell at any price. However, when the Rochefort house burns down and an uncle wants to take advantage of Floréan, Noir helps him and takes him in. Floréan becomes involved in Noir's adventures and travels with him to Morocco, where both of them, together with friends Laila and Noël, search for the treasure of the Knights Templar. Azura, Noir's teacher who invited her, turns out to be the real opponent.

In Galaxy , Noir, Floréan and their helper, Lila, are trapped in a snowstorm in a castle from which they want to steal art. Over the course of the night, more and more of the other guests are found dead in the castle and the three have to solve the riddle that is also related to Floréan's childhood friend and niece of the castle lord Eleonora.

publication

The manga was published in individual chapters from October 1999 to September 2002 in the manga magazine Comic Eyes published by Shueisha in Japan. The chapters were later published in four edited volumes. This was followed by the two sequels Gorgeous Carat Galaxy in one volume in April 2004 and 2011 Gorgeous Carat: L'Esperanza in two volumes, both with Getonsha . The sequel Gorgeous Carat: Ao no Karanku has appeared in the magazines Web Spica and Comic Spica of the same publisher since 2013 and has so far reached three volumes.

All four volumes of the manga were published in German by Carlsen Verlag from January 2005 to August 2006 . Also appeared Galaxy and 2012 La Esperanza . An English version was released by Tokyopop under the Blu label, the first sequel then in 2006 by Digital Manga Publishing and the second again by Tokyopop. Galaxy has also been translated into Italian.

reception

Jason Thompson praises the flair of the story, which is determined by the detailed backgrounds and costumes. The design of the main characters is attractive, but not very memorable. The simple stories focused on the adventure and crime part. Still, the combination of action and the decadence of fin de siècle is fun. Homoerotic allusions are limited to a few, mostly dark, scenes in which Floréan becomes the victim of his opponents or of Noir himself. The sequel Galaxy offers a functioning Gothic mystery story with atmospheric moments, but the drawings are technically poorer and the sexual allusions have almost disappeared. At IGN , the series is recommended primarily to Shōnen-Ai lovers, who are offered an exciting, action-packed story in addition to romance and the usual genre elements. The plot, implemented in “ lush ” images and with many pretty young men, is easy to follow and each of the characters is profound, convincing and interesting.

According to MangasZene , You Higuri managed to "skillfully place a wonderfully romantic and at the same time incredibly exciting story in history" . The historical views of Paris and Morocco are also praised. In the Animania you can see a clear similarity in design and figures to the series Seimaden , which the illustrator created earlier. But here the drawings are even more detailed. The story offers many bishons , "crackling eroticism" and criminal adventures, all of which provided entertaining reading pleasure . The sequel Galaxy is recommended to fans of the series, offers an exciting story with “ unpredictable twists and turns ” and spoils optically “ with the usual pompously dressed characters” .
