Goronwy , Welsh Gronwy Pybyr ([ 'gronui' pəbir ], "Gronwy the Strong"), also Gronw Pebr, Lord of Penllyn is a Celtic legendary figure. In the fourth branch of Mabinogi ( Math fab Mathonwy , "Math, the son of Mathonwys") he is the lover of Blodeuwedd . He tries to murder Llew Llaw Gyffes .

mythology

One day, when Blodeuwedd's husband Llew went away to visit his great-uncle Math fab Mathonwy , a hunting party roamed the area around Blodeuwedd's house. She falls in love with one of the hunters, Goronwy, to whom she offers her hospitality.

And then he willingly accepted the invitation and came to the courtyard. And she came to greet him and welcomed him. "Mistress, God reward you for your kindness." Ud they changed their clothes and went to sit down. But Blodeuedd looked at him, and when she looked at him, she was immediately filled with love for him. And he too looked at her, and the same thought occurred to him that had also occurred to her. He could not hide his love for her and told her this.

Therefore the two plan the death of Llew. His murder is complicated, however, since he can only die under certain conditions. Goronwy therefore spends a whole year making a stone spear.

Then Blodeuwedd asks her husband how they can kill him. Goronwy hides for the time being to overhear them. The naive Llew explains to her that he has to take a bath and that he shouldn't touch the ground when stepping out. So he ties a goat next to it, which he can step on. When Llew now stands with one foot on the edge of the bath tub and the other on the goat, Goronwy comes out of his hiding place and hurls the poisoned spear at him. However, it only hits his hip, and with a loud scream, Llew escapes in the form of an eagle.

Then Gronw rose from the hill called Bryn Cyfergyr, dropped to one knee, hurled a poisoned spear, and hit him in the side so that the shaft came out and the point stuck in him. […] The moment he disappeared, they went to the courtyard, and that night they slept together. And the next morning Gronw rose and took Ardudwy under his control. [...] that his rule extended over Ardudwy and Pennllyn.

After a long search , Llew's uncle Gwydyon finds the wounded eagle in the Nantlle Valley and transforms Llew back into a person. After his final recovery, Llew kills his rival Goronwy with his own spear, and Blodeuwedd is cast into an owl by Gwydyon as punishment for her betrayal.
