The Gottardo was a long-distance train that ran between Zurich and Milan . Initially he drove as a Trans-Europ-Express with SBB RAe TEE II sets. After the advent of the EuroCity , the Gottardo was run as such and later converted into an Intercity . He last worked as EuroNight until he was hired in 2002 .

1961–1988 - Trans-Europ-Express (TEE)

The train ran between Zurich HB and Milano Centrale from July 1, 1961 . It was run under the Trans-Europ-Express train type, the RAe TEE II of the SBB served as the vehicle . As usual with the TEE trains, it was a purely first-class train.

In 1965 the train was extended beyond Zurich to Basel. In 1969 the route of the train was changed again, the southbound trains (Switzerland – Italy) continued from Basel, while the northbound trains (Italy – Switzerland) ended in Zurich.

Between 1974 and 1979 the train route beyond Milan to Genoa was extended, but only during the summer timetable.

From 1979 the northern Basel – Zurich extension only operated during the week; in 1982 it was completely discontinued.

From May 31, 1979, the southbound trains (Switzerland – Italy) started again from Zurich Airport station , while the northbound trains (Italy – Switzerland) continued to end in Zurich. The TEE era ended on the same day with the introduction of EuroCity. The Gottardo was the only remaining train of this type that operated as a TEE until September 1988 and was then integrated into the EuroCity network.

1988–1995 - EuroCity (EC)

On September 24, 1988 the Gottardo was converted from TEE to EuroCity. RAe TEE II continued to serve as vehicles, which were modernized for this purpose and equipped with second class compartments. Accordingly, from this point on, the trains were designated as RABe EC and were given a gray color scheme.

In 1990 the southbound trains started again from Winterthur , but in 1991 again from Zurich Airport.

The RABe EC operated on this line until 1994.

1995–1997 - InterCity (IC)

From May 28, 1995 the Gottardo ran as Intercity. Compositions consisting of locomotives and wagons from the SBB were used.

1997–2002 - EuroNight (EN)

On June 1, 1997, the conversion from the previous Intercity to a EuroNight took place. From then on the Gottardo operated as a night train between Zurich and Rome . The reason for this change was the changeover of the day trains from InterCity to Cisalpino (CIS), which were operated with ETR 470 .

In June 2002 the EN Gottardo was integrated into the EN Roma (Basel – Lötschberg – Rome) as a branch from Brig (car to Zurich) and thus disappeared.
