The Gottfried Schwab Monument is a monument in Darmstadt .
History and description
The Gottfried Schwab memorial commemorates the poet Gottfried Schwab . In 1905 the monument created by the sculptor Ludwig Habich was inaugurated.
In the center of the U-shaped monument there is a life-size bronze figure of a youth with raised arms and an upward-looking gaze in an ancient gesture of prayer. The front of the base of the monument bears a bronze portrait of the poet. On the back of the base is a medallion-like relief carved into the stone . Poems by Schwab were engraved on the side surfaces of the monument base.
A low, semicircular bench surrounds the niche facing the rising slope of the Mathildenhöhe . The cheeks of the bank each bear a bronze relief. The relief on the left shows a Nordic dragon boat . The relief on the right shows a horse .
Monument protection
As an important testimony to the mature work of the sculptor Ludwig Habich in his time in Darmstadt, the monument is a cultural monument .
